Elton J. Laux

Elton J. Laux (Dutch) of Grand Gorge, passed on May 31, 2023 at the age of 95.  

He was born in Stamford Nov. 3, 1927, the son of Elton Laux and Nellie Laux (Moore) of Stamford. He graduated from Stamford Central School in 1945. He worked at the Stamford Grocery and then entered the service Dec. 4, 1945. He served in the Army of Occupation in Germany and was discharged in June 1947.

Dutch became a member of the Stamford Fire Department in August 1954 and served until 1989. At one time he served as the fire chief and served on the rescue squad as well. Dutch worked for Prospect Dairy and Mobile gas station in Stamford. His brother William Laux and Elton had their own excavating business called the “Laux Brothers.” Subsequently, Elton worked for the village of Stamford for 11 years as a water specialist. After retiring from the village, he went on to work for the Green Thumb at NYS DEC – he worked there for 18 years before fully retiring. Elton lived in the apartments at Hinkley’s for 14 years and then moved to the Grand Gorge Apartments. He was an active communicant of Sacred Heart and Saint Philip Neri Catholic Churches.

Dutch was predeceased by both his parents, his sister and brother-in-law Mary and Dari Karl of Missouri, brother William and sister-in-law Gloria Laux, and sister Betty Joan Holdridge and brother-in-law George Holdridge of Ashland.  

He is survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as many friends.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 14, at 1 p.m. at Saint Philip Neri Catholic Church in Grand Gorge, followed by a graveside service at the Catholic cemetery in Stamford.
