Explore Callicoon!

Posted

Stroll the streets of Callicoon, a small town steeped in history and abundant sightseeing opportunities. The town, located on the banks of the Delaware River, was settled by the Dutch in the 1600s.

Callicoon was known for timber rafting in the 1760s, where delimbed trees were floated downstream to sawmills before the Erie Railroad connected the Great Lakes with the eastern seaboard.

A widespread fire wiped out almost every structure on Main Street in 1888 and residents rebuilt the business district, which is bisected by train tracks and retains its 1800s vibe.

Today, Callicoon is known for its scenic beauty and charming small-town atmosphere. It’s located in western Sullivan County, and is surrounded by forests, mountains and rolling hills.

Callicoon offers plenty of outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. The nearby Catskill Mountains and the Delaware River are popular destinations for outdoor enthusiasts.

Farming Community

Callicoon has a strong farming community, with several farms offering fresh produce, eggs and other farm products. The Callicoon Farmers’ Market is held every Sunday from May to November and is a great place to find locally grown food. At the Callicoon Farmers’ Market, food producers and artisans offer wine, hard cider, pasta, condiments, prepared foods, baked goods, ice cream, jam, honey, maple syrup, herbal tea blends, skin care products, pottery, woodwork and much more. The market is a ‘producer only market.’ All vendors either grow or produce their own goods and operate within 75 miles ensuring patrons are only purchasing the freshest, highest quality, locally produced goods. callicoonfarmersmarket.org/
