A Stack of Tradition: Pancakes, Fellowship and Faith at the Delaware County Fair

Before the Ferris wheel spins, before the midway fills with music and before the livestock barns come alive, another Delaware County Fair tradition is already underway.

The smell of sizzling bacon and warm pancakes drifts across the fairgrounds as volunteers at the New Hope Church pancake tent prepare for another week of serving breakfast, fellowship and a generous helping of hometown hospitality.

For generations of fairgoers, the pancake tent has been more than a place to grab a meal. It is a familiar gathering spot - a place to catch up with friends, share a table and begin the day with a tradition rooted in faith and service.

New Hope Church in Walton has operated the pancake tent for the past 16 years, continuing a tradition started by Treadwell United Methodist Church. While the menu remains simple - pancakes, bacon, sausage and coffee - the mission behind it reaches beyond breakfast.

The tent serves exhibitors, fair workers, families and visitors, offering a welcoming place to pause during the excitement of fair week.

A Tradition Served With Syrup

The pancake tent opens before the fair officially gets into full swing and remains a steady destination throughout the week, serving visitors daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Keeping the grills hot and the tables filled takes a dedicated team of volunteers working in shifts. The morning crew alone requires about a dozen people, including cooks, kitchen helpers, servers and those keeping beverages flowing.

By the end of the week, more than 100 volunteers will have contributed their time to keep the operation running.

The preparation begins months before the first pancake hits the griddle. Starting in March, organizers review the previous year, plan improvements and begin ordering supplies.

The list of ingredients needed to feed hungry fair visitors is substantial, including hundreds of dozen eggs, cases of bacon and sausage, bags of pancake mix and plenty of milk.

More Than a Meal

The pancake tradition began because it was a practical way to serve large crowds - and it quickly became a favorite fair stop.

The goal remains simple: provide a hearty, affordable meal where families can gather without breaking the budget.

Proceeds from the pancake tent support New Hope Church ministries, including local programs, youth activities and mission efforts.
