ONEONTA - AThe Susquehanna Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club is inviting residents outdoors—with a full slate of May hikes designed for both casual walkers and more ambitious trekkers.
The chapter’s monthly schedule blends shorter, midweek outings with longer, preregistration-only Saturday hikes, offering participants a range of terrain and difficulty levels while emphasizing accessibility and community.
Among the featured excursions are a May 2 Saturday hike traversing Pine Lake to Mud Lake and into Riddell State Park, and a May 16 outing through Pharsalia Woods State Forest—both requiring advance registration. Weekly Tuesday hikes will explore local landscapes including the Susquehanna Greenway, Homer Folks State Forest and Bulldog Run Loop near Delhi.
Organizers describe most Tuesday outings as “relatively easy,” covering short distances over rolling or flat terrain at a leisurely pace, though participants are expected to bring appropriate gear and maintain a fitness level suited to the activity.
The chapter will also host its monthly meeting and potluck on May 20, beginning at 6 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. presentation titled “A Treasure in Our Valley.” Meetings through May are held at Elm Park United Methodist Church in Oneonta, with summer gatherings moving to area parks.
Beyond its regular schedule, the chapter is expanding a newer initiative: the Saturday “all-day hike” series. Introduced last year to offer longer, more physically demanding outings, the program drew more than 80 participators across seven hikes. In response, organizers have increased the 2026 series to 10 hikes, with a mix of returning destinations and new routes.
Participation in the all-day series is capped and requires preregistration, reflecting both safety considerations and growing demand.
The chapter encourages carpooling to reduce environmental impact and notes that both members and nonmembers are welcome at hikes and meetings.
