SIDNEY - The odds of winning a million dollars in the lottery are vanishingly small - exactly 1 in 11,688,053.52, according to the New York State Lottery Commission. Yet on Dec. 24, improbability gave way to reality in Sidney, when a Powerball ticket matched the numbers needed for a million-dollar second prize.
The win was part of a drawing that scattered major payouts across the state. A second million-dollar ticket was sold in Lindenhurst, while eight third-prize tickets were purchased in Camillus, Cortlandt Manor, Holtsville, Islandia, Long Beach, Mahopac, Montauk and Niagara Falls.
For the retailers who sold the winning tickets, however, the windfall was largely symbolic. New York pays retailers a commission of about 6% on ticket sales, meaning a $2 ticket yields only a few cents in profit. Unlike many states, New York does not provide a bonus to retailers who sell tickets tied to large jackpots or major prizes.
Still, for one player in Sidney, the Christmas Eve drawing turned long odds into a life-changing moment — a reminder that while the lottery rarely rewards belief, it occasionally rewards persistence, chance, or sheer luck.
