ANDES — On Saturday, July 12, the rhythms of old-time Appalachian fiddle music will once again echo through the Catskills, as the Andes Fire Department Pavilion hosts the third annual community square dance, presented by Catskills Old-time.
This free-spirited outdoor gathering — part tradition, part reunion — will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a family-friendly dance, followed by a full community dance from 6 to 8 p.m. Set against the rolling landscape of the Tremperskill Valley, the evening promises live string band music, guided group dances, and a nostalgic nod to a time when neighbors met on warm summer nights to move in step.
There’s no need for experience — or even a partner, organizers emphasized. A caller will lead dancers through each move, making the event accessible to both seasoned do-si-do-ers and curious newcomers. Observers are welcome, too.
Local fiddler Becca Wintle, the event’s founder and a familiar face on the regional folk music circuit, will lead a lineup of musicians from across New York State. The players are steeped in the Appalachian string band tradition, ensuring a sound that’s both authentic and infectious.
The suggested donation is $10–20 (cash only), with food available for purchase. All proceeds benefit the Andes Volunteer Fire Department. The pavilion is located on Tremperskill Road, just beyond the Town Courthouse.
