ONEONTA - Kathryn Davino, board member of the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society, will take audiences on a journey to New Zealand during a special program at Elm Park Methodist Church on May 15 at 7:30 p.m., with a Zoom option available for remote participants. Registration for the virtual session is available at https://tinyurl.com/2junt69v
Davino, who traveled to the island nation with her husband Al in February 2025, will share photographs and stories from her winter visit, highlighting New Zealand’s dramatic landscapes—from the snowy peaks of the South Island to the geothermal wonders of the North Island. She will also introduce attendees to the country’s unique wildlife, including the flightless, nocturnal kiwi, the heavy-bodied kākāpō, and the mischievous alpine parrot known as the kea. Film enthusiasts may recognize some of the locations where The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies were shot, taking advantage of New Zealand’s varied terrain.
A retired biology teacher from Delaware Academy in Delhi, Davino has been a member of the DOAS Board of Directors since 2016. An avid birder, gardener, and wildlife enthusiast, she brings both scientific insight and personal passion to her presentations.
