HAMDEN — Farmers and agricultural professionals will gather next week for the 2026 Delaware County Crop School, a one-day program focused on improving crop production, soil management, and pest control. The session will take place Tuesday, March 24, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Hamden Town Hall, 20 Covert Hollow Road.
For a registration fee of $10 per participant, attendees will receive lunch provided by The Farmer’s Wife, as well as 2.75 DEC pesticide credits and 4.5 CCA CEUs. Preregistration is encouraged by contacting Kim Holden at 607-865-7090 or register online.
The program features a series of presentations from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Cornell University researchers, and industry experts:
• Manure Management in Delaware County: Dale Dewing and Paul Cerosaletti (CCE Delaware) will review the 2025 yield and quality effects of liquid manure injected on sod.
• Valuing Manure for Corn Production: Juan Carlos Ramoz Tanchez (Cornell Nutrient Management Spear Program) will present statewide research, including Delaware County sites, demonstrating manure’s contribution beyond fertilizer replacement.
• Seed Pest Prevalence and Treatments: Mike Hunter (Cornell IPM) will discuss seed pests across New York state and the effectiveness of neonicotinoid treatments, as well as alternative control options.
• Soil Liming and Nutrient Availability: Kari Sheridan (Watershed Agricultural Council) will share results from multi-year studies on liming and its impact on nutrient levels in Delaware County fields within the NYC watershed.
• Mycotoxin Management in Forages: John Winchell (Alltech) will offer guidance on controlling mold and mycotoxins in forages and feed rations.
• Fungal Diseases in Corn and Soybeans: Dr. Camelo Parada Rojas (Cornell Plant Pathology) will examine common fungal diseases and strategies for systemic and late-season fungicide applications.
• Herbicide-Resistant Weeds: Mike Hunter (Cornell IPM) will provide an update on herbicide-resistant weeds in New York and discuss strategies for late-season control of annual grasses in corn and soybeans.
