DELHI - The sounds of cannon fire, marching soldiers and battlefield commands will once again echo across the grounds of the Delaware County Historical Association later this month as Civil War reenactors return for a weekend devoted to one of the nation’s defining conflicts.
The annual “Clash in the Catskills” Civil War reenactment will be held June 27 and 28 at the Delaware County Historical Association, where members of the 144th New York Reenactment Group will recreate three battles fought during the Civil War and offer visitors a glimpse into military and civilian life of the era.
The event pays particular tribute to the 144th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, the largest and best-known Civil War regiment raised in Delaware County. Composed almost entirely of local residents, the regiment served in several campaigns during the war. Its bloodiest engagement came at the Battle of Honey Hill in South Carolina in late 1864.
Hosted jointly by the Delaware County Historical Association and the 144th New York Reenactment Group, the weekend will feature battlefield demonstrations, military encampments, living history exhibits, artillery demonstrations, children’s activities, a military surgeon presentation and other programs designed to immerse visitors in 19th-century life.
Reenactors portraying both Union and Confederate soldiers will participate in three battle reenactments over the two-day event:
• The Battle of Seven Pines, 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 27
• The Battle of the Peach Orchard, 3 p.m. Saturday, June 27
• The Battle of Honey Hill, 1 p.m. Sunday, June 28
The grounds will open at 9 a.m. both days. Lunch will be available for purchase.
Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for active-duty and retired military personnel and DCHA members, and free for children 12 and younger.
The Delaware County Historical Association is located at 46549 State Highway 10, approximately 2.5 miles north of the Village of Delhi.
