Clara Holcomb Stewart, 97 years young, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away peacefully on Aug. 11, 2025. Clara was born in the town of Meredith to Ralph and Louesa Holcomb and spent most of her life in Delaware County.
Clara had an enduring love of learning. She started formal education in a one room schoolhouse in District 8 on West Peakes Brook Road in Meredith and was a member of the first graduating class at the newly built Delaware Academy. She was an enthusiastic member of the Delaware Academy Band where she played slide trombone and French horn. Clara was always a farm girl at heart and as a 4-H leader and 4-H Extension Agent she passed on her love of agriculture, food preparation, sewing and farming to generations of youth. Clara had a deep appreciation of history, worked to preserve it, and delighted in helping families trace their genealogy in Delaware County. Clara served as Delaware County Historian and was the first President of the Delhi Historical Society. She was very involved in the community, a lifelong, active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Delhi and a proud member of the American Legion.
Clara had a long and happy marriage to Howard Stewart of Delhi. She is survived by her three children, Jane Stewart Green, Tom (Cathy) Stewart, Sandra (Michael) Smith, grandchildren Amy (Jason) Carter, Emily (Ian) Hetzler, Noah Green, Lauren Stewart and brother Fred Holcomb.
She was preceded in death by her husband Howard, her brothers Jim Holcomb, R. Lee Holcomb and Percy Holcomb, and her son-in-law Dan Green.
