Bushel, a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit, volunteer-led, mixed-use space dedicated to art, agriculture, ecology, and action, will host a four-week workshop taught by Dr. Iris Cushing, writer and educator. She holds a Ph.D. in English from the CUNY Graduate Center, and a master’s degree from Columbia University.
Learn to brainstorm, outline, write and revise a compelling personal statement essay to submit with college applications. This workshop series is open to Delaware County residents who are applying to college this fall. All sessions are held at Bushel Collective, 106 Main Street, Delhi. Cost of the workshops are on a sliding donation scale of $5–$10 per session; no one will be turned away for lack of funds. The workshop is capped at 10 students; preregistration is required at bushelcollective.org/events
A 650-word personal statement essay is part of the common application used by almost all four-year colleges and universities. Students will also learn how to approach writing shorter supplemental essays, which are required by many colleges as part of the application package.
The workshop will cover what the personal statement essay is about, how to generate ideas for the essay, and how to write an essay that presents your most authentic self to admissions committees. Students will also create supplemental essays that complement the personal statement essay. There will be time to write and revise both essays during the workshop meetings, and at-home writing assignments will be included. Students who participate fully can expect to leave the workshop with finished essays.
