Delhi gravestone workshop focuses on Revolutionary War veterans

DELHI — On Saturday, May 24, residents and history enthusiasts will gather at Woodland Cemetery for a hands-on workshop aimed at conserving some of Delhi’s oldest and most significant gravestones — those marking the final resting places of Revolutionary War soldiers.

Led by Marianne Greenfield, a professional gravestone conservator and the Town of Delhi Historian, the two-hour session will teach participants how to properly clean and preserve aging headstones. Hosted by the Friends of Woodland Cemetery, the workshop highlights a growing community effort to safeguard local heritage.

Woodland Cemetery, formally established in 1847, is a hilltop burial ground with roots reaching back to 1813, when General Henry Leavenworth purchased the land for his wife’s grave. It is home to the graves of prominent figures such as U.S. Representative Herman D. Gould and former Lieutenant Governor Erastus Root.

Saturday’s conservation efforts are part of a broader initiative to preserve the historic site and its stories for future generations.
