Delhi mayor urges water smarts amid drought warning

Posted

DELHI - In response to a drought warning issued by the Department of Health for Delaware County and surrounding areas, Delhi Mayor Jeff Gearhart is urging residents to adopt voluntary water conservation measures to help preserve the village’s water supply. This marks the second of four drought stages, and while the situation isn’t critical, proactive steps are essential to avoid escalation.

Gearhart, in consultation with Water Supervisor Jay Decker, announced the initiative.

The village is asking everyone - residents, employees, and large water users alike — to use common sense and reduce unnecessary water usage.

Simple Ways to Conserve Water

Gearthart shared practical tips to help residents cut back on water use:

• Turn off faucets promptly and avoid letting water run unnecessarily.

• Limit shower time.

• Skip washing vehicles during this period.

• Keep a bottle of water in the fridge instead of running the tap for a drink.

• Encourage children to brainstorm conservation ideas, making it a teachable moment about natural resources.

Residents are encouraged to find more water-saving tips online and incorporate additional measures as needed.

Current Water Levels Stable but Monitored

While village wells have shown a slight decline, the situation isn’t dire, Gearhart reports, and there is no need to panic. It took an extended dry spell to reach this point, Gearthart continued, and it will take sustained wet weather to replenish the water table.

The Department of Health will provide updates, and further measures will be implemented if necessary. For questions or concerns, residents can contact village hall for assistance at 607-746-2258.
