Delhi Water Main Break Triggers Boil Water Advisory

Posted

Update: On July 22, 2026 the "Boil Water" advisory was lifted, according to the village of Delhi.

DELHI - A water main break has prompted the village of Delhi to issue a precautionary boil water advisory for portions of the village following the break on Sunday, July 19.

The advisory remains in effect until further notice for customers on Crestwood Drive, Cuddeback Avenue, Delview Terrace, Delview Terrace Extension, Edgerton Street, Upper Franklin Street, Meredith Street, Phoebe Lane, Prospect Street and Spruce Street.

Under guidance from the New York State Department of Health, residents in the affected area should bring tap water to a full rolling boil for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, preparing food, making coffee or other beverages, mixing baby formula, washing fruits and vegetables, or making ice.

Health officials also recommend washing dishes with boiled water that has been cooled or sanitizing them with a diluted bleach solution if washing by hand. Most household dishwashers do not reach temperatures high enough to sanitize dishes unless they have a sanitizing cycle of at least 170 degrees Fahrenheit.

Water may continue to be used for laundry. Healthy individuals may also shower, bathe and shave with tap water, provided they avoid swallowing it. However, the state advises that people with open wounds, recent surgical incisions, weakened immune systems or chronic illnesses should use cooled, boiled water or bottled water for bathing. Young children should be supervised to prevent them from swallowing tap water during baths.

Boil water advisories are issued as a precaution whenever a water main break or other disruption could allow contaminants to enter the distribution system while water pressure is reduced. The advisory will remain in place until water quality testing confirms the system is safe and the village formally lifts the notice.
