Delhi youth football tops Walton-Sidney 48-24 in Senior Classic

SIDNEY - The Delhi youth football team, consisting of six grade student athletes, defeated the combined Walton-Sidney team, 48-24, Saturday, Oct. 28 in the Senior Classic, the “moving up” and final game of the youth football season.

Delhi set the pace, scoring two touchdowns with one good extra-point kick in the first quarter, keeping Walton-Sidney scoreless.

Early in the second quarter, Delhi scored again, with the Warriors bouncing back with a touchdown of their own from second-and-goal with just over three minutes left in the half. With 42 seconds left in the first half, Delhi took a big 15-yard penalty for an illegal block in the back, moving the ball to the 28-yard line for an automatic first down.

The Warriors capitalized on the error and scored from first-and-goal on a second down, bringing the score to 20-14, Delhi. With 11-seconds left on the clock, the Warriors stripped the ball from the Bulldogs' quarterback and ran it back for a 65-yard touchdown run, putting the Warriors ahead 22-20. A good two-point conversion put the Warriors in the lead 24-20 at half time.

The Bulldogs answered in the third quarter with a touchdown at the 7:42 minute mark, for a 24-24 tie. A good two-point conversation put Delhi ahead, 26-24.

The Bulldogs turned up the heat with an 80-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and another good two-point conversion for a score of 34-24, Delhi.

In the fourth quarter Delhi intercepted the ball on Walton-Sidney’s first possession at the 40-yard line, and at the 9:15 mark, scored another touchdown for a score of 40-24, Delhi.

With 3:23 left in the game, Delhi scored with a 55-yard touchdown run with a good two-point conversation for a final score of 48-24, Bulldogs.
