Elwood M. Heddon

Elwood M. Heddon, former Walton optometrist, died Oct. 4 in Cooperstown.

The son of Arthur J. and Pearl M. (Jones) Heddon, Dr. Heddon was born in Batavia on Jan. 6, 1928. He earned a B.S. from the School of Optometry at Columbia University and a B.D. from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He studied at Alfred University and Houghton College. Dr. Heddon practiced in West Winfield for 18 years and in Walton from 1981 to 2007. He served with the U.S. Army in Korea from 1951 to 1953.

On March 8, 1959, he married Joy L. Horn, who survives. He is also survived by his sister Beatrice M. Rial of Central, South Carolina, son Wendell C. (Pranee) Heddon of New York City, and daughters Phyllis R. (Mark A.) Maxwell of Florissant, Missouri, and Martha J. Heddon of Beverly, Massachusetts. He leaves behind six grandchildren: Stephan Heddon, Matthew Heddon, Andrew Maxwell, Joshua Maxwell, Emily Doria and Marie Smith; and four great-grandchildren: Isla Smith, Eden Smith, Olive Smith and Hugo Doria.

A memorial service will be held at the Reformed Presbyterian Church, 34 East Street, Walton, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to World Vision International or a local church program that feeds the hungry.
