First Bells, Fresh Starts

Andes, Margaretville, and Roxbury welcome students back with new rules and renewed energy

Eastern Delaware County’s three public schools got the buses rolling Thursday, Sept. 4 as about 700 students in grades prekindergarten through 12 headed back to their studies for the 2025-26 school year. Andes, Margaretville and Roxbury Central School officials reported smooth sailing and cheerful families as what one superintendent called “another new beginning” unfolded.

Despite some first day jitters for the youngest students, most kids were happy to get back to seeing friends and favorite teachers and staffers. All districts rolled out new policies for cell phones and electronic devices implementing New York state legislation mandating a school-day ban.

Roxbury had an open house Monday, Sept. 8 at 5:30 p.m. and Margaretville invites its community in Thursday, Sept. 18. The Andes team welcomes the community on Thursday, Oct. 9. All three schools have websites with calendars of events, information on board meetings and other important community information.

The Roxbury Board of Education met Wednesday, Sept. 10 and will meet every second Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Andes and Margaretville boards both meet on the third Wednesday of the month. ACS will convene at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17 with MCS meeting at 5 p.m. that night.
