Grazing Workshops: A Master Class in the Shifting Seasons of Grass

Posted

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County offers grazing workshops Feb. 26 and 27 in Hamden and Grand Gorge.

The aim of these workshops is to provide a roadmap for the upcoming year, moving beyond the simple act of putting cattle to pasture and toward a sophisticated four-season management strategy.

Led by a panel of four agricultural experts, the workshops will dissect the calendar year into critical decision points. The curriculum reflects the nuanced reality of modern pasture management: The Early Prep: Focuses on “frost seeding” and the logistical planning required before the ground fully thaws in April; The Spring Flush: Strategies for managing the aggressive growth of May and June, when grass enters its reproductive phase and requires careful monitoring to maintain nutritional quality; The Summer Slump: Addressing the inevitable heat of July and August with drought-mitigation tactics to keep livestock fed and soil protected; The Long Game: Techniques for “stockpiling” forage in September to manage grass for dormancy through the winter months.
