‘Hamlet’ Arrives in Margaretville for One-Day Run

MARGARETVILLE — For one afternoon only, Shakespeare’s most haunted prince will take the stage in the Catskills.

The Open Eye Theater will host a touring production of Hamlet on Sunday, April 19 at 2 p.m., bringing a streamlined, 90-minute adaptation of the tragedy to a local audience. The performance, presented in collaboration with the Catskill Mountain Shakespeare company and directed by Sydney Berk, is designed to be both accessible and immediate, with an emphasis on pace and clarity.

The production distills the original text into a brisk telling while preserving its central tensions — grief, betrayal and revenge — offering an entry point for students as well as seasoned theatergoers. Organizers describe the staging as intimate and performance-driven, aimed at drawing audiences into the emotional core of the play.

The single performance highlights the rarity of the event in a region where professional Shakespeare productions are infrequent.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for students. More information is available at theopeneyetheater.org or by calling 845-586-1660.
