ONEONTA - Helios Care’s annual Turkey Trot for Hospice returns Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 26, bringing runners, walkers and community members together to support hospice and bereavement services across the region.

The event begins at 9 a.m. on House Street in front of Riverside School in Oneonta. Participants can choose between a 5K run and a 2.5K walk.

This year’s event includes two special fundraising challenges.

The Dash & Donate Canned Food Challenge will benefit local families. For every canned good donated at designated collection sites, $1 will be contributed. Each can carried to the designated drop-off point along the race route will generate a $2 contribution.

Last year, participants collected 324 cans and raised $500. Organizers are challenging the community to exceed those totals this year.

A separate individual and team fundraising challenge invites participants to gather family members, friends and coworkers to raise money for Helios Care. Special trophies will recognize fundraising efforts. Proceeds support the organization’s programs and services throughout Otsego, Delaware and Schoharie counties.

Early registration and packet pickup will be available at three locations:

• Tuesday, Nov. 24, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Helios Care office, 297 River Street Service Road, Oneonta.

• Wednesday, Nov. 25, 4 to 6 p.m.: Oneonta Boys & Girls Club, 70 River Street.

• Thanksgiving morning, 7:30 to 8:45 a.m.: Oneonta Boys & Girls Club.

Participants are encouraged to register early to receive a commemorative Turkey Trot shirt, available while supplies last.

More than a holiday race, the event raises funds for Helios Care’s grief support services, children’s bereavement camp, caregiver programs and community education.
