In Sidney, a Helicopter Base Marks 15 Years of Lifesaving Flights

SIDNEY -  LifeNet of New York 7-8, the air-medical base on River Street here, will mark its 15th anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 27, with an open house recognizing the first responders, hospital partners and community supporters who have sustained its mission across the Southern Tier and Catskills.

Former patients are expected to attend, including Anielle McEwan-Lomnicki, 16, who was flown by LifeNet after being struck by a drunk driver while walking home from school two years ago. State Senator Peter Oberacker and Assemblymember Joe Angelino are also slated to join the commemoration.

LifeNet 7-8 is one of 12 air-medical bases in a statewide network that operates 24 hours a day, year-round, often described as “flying ERs” or mobile intensive care units. Crews deliver advanced critical care at the scene and during transport, carry life-sustaining equipment and medications, and can administer whole blood in flight—capabilities that can be decisive in rural or hard-to-reach areas.

The event will run from noon to 3 p.m. at 199 River Street in Sidney. Visitors will be able to tour the aircraft, view specialized medical equipment and learn how rapid air transport affects patient outcomes.
