Letter to the Editor: What Are You Afraid Of?

Posted

I have had solar panels for 10 years. I started thoroughly researching them 10 years before I had them installed - different companies, different products.

I don’t understand many of the objections to solar energy. Why would anyone object to clean energy and lower electric bills (unless they have interests in other energy sources?)

My house faces south/southeast which is not the optimum position. The slant on my roof is less than appropriate. As a result, I had the panels installed in my backyard where the panels could be faced and slanted for the best productivity.

I don’t store the energy. I’m “hooked to the grid.” That means I produce energy and it goes to NYSEG. Then as I need energy I get the energy from NYSEG. It works much as a bank. You have money put in and take it out when you need it. My electric bills from last September through April have been zero each month.

I’ve heard criticisms about ‘cutting down trees.’ Most of the hills and mountains are inappropriate for solar production. They face the wrong way or are the wrong slant. The best areas are closer to flat - fields and meadows - where panels can be positioned for the most effective productivity. If panels are high enough they can be mowed under or livestock can graze under them. Mine are low so I have to weed whack under them but I use an electric weedwhacker.

The panels do not affect wildlife. I put salt licks under the panels in the winter and then deer enjoy them in lower levels of snow.

My panels have produced over 79,000 kilowatt hours. When I’m not using the energy, you are. I have yet to hear one valid reason that would make me regret my decision to install solar panels. What are you afraid of?
