Local author at Hunting Tavern Aug. 11

Local author Jennifer Kabat will read from her new book, “The Eighth Moon,” at the Hunting Tavern Museum, 288 Main Street, Andes, Sunday, Aug. 11, at 2 p.m., sponsored by the Andes Society for History and Culture (ASHC).

When Kabat moved to the Catskills in 2005, she had no idea it was the site of the Anti-Rent War, an early episode of American rural populism. As she forges friendships with her new neighbors and explores the countryside she slowly learns of the 1840s uprising, when poor tenant farmers fought to redistribute their landlords’ vast estates.

On Andes Community Day Weekend Kabat will read from the book and engage the audience in conversation about the book. She will include information on her research that went into “The Eighth Moon,” a memoir of belonging and rebellion, including the title, which is taken from an threatening letter sent anonymously by an Anti-Renter. The author is keen to speak at the same location where Osman Steele, the Undersheriff who was shot at an Andes farm, had his last meal and declared “Lead cannot penetrate Steele.”

The program begins at 2 p.m. It is free, and all are welcome.
