For those eager to trade winter’s last chill for a steady walk in the woods, the Adirondack Mountain Club’s Susquehanna Chapter has laid out a full slate of March outings across Otsego and Delaware counties.
The month begins March 3 with a hike to Clark Tower in Cooperstown, followed by a March 10 walk at Pine Lake in Oneonta.
On March 17, hikers will set out along the Catskill Scenic Rail Trail from Stamford toward Gilboa, tracing a former rail corridor that now draws walkers and cyclists year-round.
Later in the month, the group plans a March 24 outing at Gilbert Lake State Park in Laurens and a March 31 hike through Whaupaunaucau State Forest in Norwich.
The hikes are designed to be accessible: generally short distances over rolling or flat terrain at a relaxed pace. Organizers note that participants should arrive with appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear and sufficient water. Any departure from the “easy” designation is flagged in advance.
Beyond the trails, the chapter will hold its monthly meeting March 18 at Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut Street in Oneonta. A potluck supper begins at 6 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by a presentation from Jim Mills on creating a new walking pilgrimage pathway for Oneonta. Attendees are asked to bring a dish to share along with their own table service and beverages.
The Susquehanna Chapter meets on the third Wednesday of each month. Winter meetings, from September through May, are held indoors at Elm Park; summer gatherings move to local parks. Both members and nonmembers are welcome.
Organizers also encourage carpooling to reduce the group’s carbon footprint, particularly for those traveling from outside Oneonta.
