Margaretville Cauliflower Festival Returns for 22nd Year, Sept. 19

Free Event Celebrates A Crop Once Known As The Catskills’ “White Gold”

MARGARETVILLE — Cauliflower will once again take center stage in Margaretville on Saturday, Sept. 19, when the village hosts its 22nd annual Cauliflower Festival.

The free, family-oriented event will bring more than 25 vendors and artisans to the village, along with live music, children’s activities, farmers market offerings and local food and drink.

The festival’s more unusual offerings are part of its appeal. Visitors can find cauliflower-inspired dishes, including pickled cauliflower martinis, alongside more traditional fall fare and a tractor pull.

Area restaurants will offer cauliflower specials throughout the weekend.

The festival also reflects a piece of Catskills agricultural history. Cauliflower was once an important regional crop, earning the nickname “white gold” from the early 1900s through the 1950s. The industry eventually declined as large-scale production in California captured more of the market.

This year, locally grown cauliflower is returning to the festival. Finch Farm of Fleischmanns is growing the crop, which will be available for purchase and incorporated into offerings from festival vendors.

The festival is open to all ages and admission is free.
