Mary Patricia “Pat” Stafford Merrill, 73, passed away peacefully at home in Kansas City, Missouri, May 27, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born and raised in Lake George, New York, Pat was the daughter of the late Joseph and Dorothy (Brooks) Stafford.
She was also preceded in death by her brother, Michael Stafford.
She is lovingly remembered by her children, Brooke Merrill Smith (Gerald) and Ryan Stafford Merrill (Jennifer); her sisters Jo Ann Stafford-Paige (Joe), Maureen Ledda (Gene), and Kathleen Arnheiter (Tony); and her cherished grandchildren, Aidan Ditta, Genevieve Ditta, Henry Merrill, Harrison Merrill, and Joseph Smith, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy.
Pat graduated from Lake George Central School in 1971 and went on to earn her bachelor of science in elementary education from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1975. She began her teaching career at Ballard Elementary School in Wilton where she taught kindergarten through fourth grade.
After the birth of her second child, Pat and her family moved to Downsville in 1981. During these years, she dedicated herself to raising her children while continuing to nurture young minds through an in-home nursery school where she was affectionately known as Miss Pat. She was also a familiar and beloved presence in the community, working at Sue-Ellen’s Country Store, substitute teaching at Downsville Central School, and sharing her exceptional talent for making homemade soups and breads.
In 1989, Pat returned to the classroom full-time at Roscoe Central School in Roscoe where she taught second and fourth grades. Second grade held a special place in her heart, and she found great joy in helping her students build confidence and curiosity. She retired from teaching in 2009, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students and colleagues.
That same year, Pat relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, where she embraced her most treasured role of Nana. For the past 17 years, she was a constant and loving presence in her daughter Brooke’s family, deeply devoted to the daily support of Aidan, Genevieve, and Joseph. Her five grandchildren were the center of her world, and she delighted in every moment spent with them.
Pat will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for her family, her dedication to children and education, and her gift for creating comfort, whether through a welcoming home, a kind word, or a lovingly prepared meal.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held Aug. 14 in Lake George, bringing her journey full circle to the place she always called home.
