Merwin Kirk Jr., or Sonny, as most everyone called him, died at home on Sept. 18, overlooking the lake he lived on, his favorite place, surrounded by the people who love him most. He wasn’t far from Uncle Sonny’s, the restaurant he was so proud to own with Sherry for 17 years. He spent most of his life working hard, as a farmer’s son would, and enjoyed every moment of it. He grew up with four siblings in Delaware County, a place he prioritized returning to every year for the county fair. His time on the Delaware Academy wrestling team there gave him some of his fondest memories. Sonny never saw a lawn he didn’t want to mow and every pizza he made was delicious. He always tried to teach his son-in-law, Lewie, all his tips and tricks. What he did best, though, was take care of his love, Sherry, and his daughter, Lisa. Everything he did in his life was to make their lives easier and better. Sherry and Sonny shared a loving and supportive life together for 38 years. His constant support, guidance and presence made Lisa feel like she had a safety net to be mostly fearless in life. She’s proud and grateful to be daddy’s little girl.
If you’re sad when you hear this news, Sonny would tell you that all the pigs on the farm eventually die, so don’t cry for too long. Instead, next time you’re working hard, or next time you eat a sausage, egg and cheese, drink a Tia Maria or fresh-squeezed orange juice, snack on a Cheeto or homemade bread - like his mom used to make - see a pontoon boat, or pass a Corvette or classic Mustang with its top down, think of him and smile.
