Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators Exam

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced that it will begin offering an online examination for individuals seeking licenses as Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators, a move officials said is intended to streamline access to the credentialing process.

The two-hour exam, which is free, will be administered online on designated dates throughout 2026. Test-takers may log in at any time between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. on their assigned date.

Under state law, licensed Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators — commonly known as NWCOs - must be at least 18 years old and are authorized to trap, transport and release wildlife when animals damage property, create public safety concerns or otherwise become a nuisance. License holders may operate commercially or work on behalf of municipalities. Residency in New York is not required.

The 2026 exam dates are March 13, April 17, May 15, June 26, July 17, Aug. 14, Nov. 6 and Dec. 11. Registration must be completed by the day before each exam.

All materials, including registration instructions and the training manual, are available on the department’s website. After registering, applicants will receive a confirmation email with a one-time link granting access to the exam on the selected date. Those who pass will receive instructions on submitting a license application. The department advises candidates not to submit applications or fees until they have successfully completed the test.
