Old-Time Sound Meets New Energy in Bainbridge

Posted

The Millstone Rounders will bring their acoustic, one-microphone approach to the Bainbridge Town Hall Theatre on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m., offering an evening rooted in the shared traditions of American and Celtic music.

Formed in 2017 during a recording session at Millstone Studios, the band takes its name from an offhand remark that stuck. The group is led by mandolinist James Gascoyne, a Louisville, Ky., native, and fiddler Oona Grady of the Finger Lakes, whose Irish roots shape the ensemble’s sound. Gascoyne and Grady also perform together as the Celtic-influenced duo Drank The Gold.

They are joined by guitarist Matt Griffin, banjo player Scott Hopkins and upright bassist Dylan Perrillo. Together, the five musicians move easily among country, gospel, blues, early rock ’n’ roll and fiddle traditions from both sides of the Atlantic—music that feels at once classic and current.

Performing acoustically around a single microphone, the Rounders echo an earlier era, before amplification blurred the lines between genres. In that spirit, a single set may travel from a gospel hymn to an old English ballad, a blues tune, an Irish pub song or a Scottish fiddle piece.

Doors open at 6 p.m.; seating is open. Tickets are available at the door or by reservation at 607-288-3882. The gallery will feature work by Kathy Smith and will be open before the show and during intermission, free to the public. More information is available at www.jerichoarts.com
