It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Philip R. Smith Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, who departed this life on May 14, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on January 12, 1938, in Trout Creek to his parents Jesse Smith and Rena Wayman, Philip was a man of many passions and a steadfast presence in the lives of those he cherished.

Philip proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. He was stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey, where he was a cook.

Philip grew up on his family farm in Trout Creek, where he developed a deep love for nature and the outdoors. His dedication to his craft as a stonecutter led him to work in the bluestone industry, where he honed his skills since his teenage years. He spent 11 years at Breakstone in Walton but was primarily self-employed, delighting in the artistry of his work.

Throughout his life, Philip enjoyed a variety of pastimes that brought him joy and fulfillment. He was an avid bowler and golfer, relished reading, and found serenity in fishing. He took pleasure in gardening and cherished the companionship of his beloved dogs. Philip was a private man who valued his time alone and the simple pleasures life offered.

In his later years he enjoyed spending winters with his daughter Renne and son-in-law in the Carolinas, and treasured visits with his brother Larry in Florida. His love for family always shone through, and he will be deeply missed by his devoted wife of 66 years Betty Smith, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Philip is survived by his loving family, his wife Betty Smith, his children Cindy (Scott) Stevenson, Philip (Roxanne) Smith Jr., and Renne (Raymond) Grossman-Smith; his brother Larry Smith, and two sisters, Linda Smith and Carol Finch; grandchildren Chris, Carly, Nichole, Avery, Morgan, Julie, and Kendra; great-grandchildren Noah, Abby, Mya, Kai, Nova, Sylvia, Hailey, Teegan, Greyson, Bode, Beckett, Aden, Lane, Kellan, Gavin, and Meaghen. Philip is also survived by his cousin Betty Carlson, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Philip was predeceased by his parents Jesse and Rena Smith, his brother Orin Richie, son in-law Raymond Grossman and all of his friends passed on.

Calling hours will be held Friday May 30, from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. with service at 11am at New Hope Community Church 45 Stockton Ave, Walton, with Pastor Larry Light officiating. Following the service there will be a graveside service at the Walton Cemetery.
