Put safety first this ice fishing season

Posted

Four inches of solid, clear ice is generally considered safe when accessing ice on foot. It’s not only good practice to check thickness before leaving shore, but also at multiple locations when on the waterbody, as ice conditions can vary. Ice thickness can be tested using an auger or “spud bar” (a long, metal tool with a chisel on one end). Checking with local bait and tackle shops can provide up-to-date information on safe ice locations and also what other anglers are catching.

Don’t forget - you need a valid fishing license before heading out on the ice.
