The American Red Cross is calling on residents to step up and help replenish the nation’s blood supply after severe winter weather and seasonal illnesses led to thousands of missed donations.
With more than 15,000 blood and platelet donations going uncollected since the start of the year, hospitals are facing a critical need — especially for type O negative blood -- the universal donor type. The Red Cross warns that ongoing winter storms and flu season could further disrupt donations, making every contribution vital.
Local donation drives are scheduled across the county, offering residents a chance to make a lifesaving impact:
• Downsville: Feb. 19, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., Downsville Fire Department, 15166 State Highway 30
• Delhi: Feb. 20, 1 - 5:30 p.m., Delhi Alliance Church, 16178 NY-28
• Sidney: Feb. 25, 1 - 6 p.m., Sidney Elks Lodge, 104 River Street.
• Walton: Feb. 25, 1 - 5:30 p.m., Walton First Baptist Church, 55 Townsend Street.
To encourage participation, the Red Cross offers a $15 e-gift card to donors who give blood or platelets between Jan. 27 and Feb. 28.
Appointments can be made using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
