Roxbury Arts Group Invites Community to Quilt for Welcome Blanket Project

STAMFORD - The Roxbury Arts Group will host a free three-session quilting workshop in September, giving participants an opportunity to learn quilting skills while contributing handmade blankets to a national refugee welcome project.

“Welcome Blanket Quilting with Megan Avery” will be held Sept. 2, 9 and 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Headwaters Arts Center, 66 Main St. Registration is required.

The workshop is part of the Welcome Blanket project, which collects handmade blankets for refugees who have recently arrived in the United States. Each 40-by-40-inch blanket is accompanied by a note sharing the maker’s immigration or migration story and a message to its recipient: “You are welcome here.”

Participants will create and personalize quilts under the guidance of Megan Avery. No previous quilting experience is required, and materials will be provided, although participants may bring fabric from their own collections.

At the end of the workshop, the completed quilts will be sent to the Welcome Blanket project for distribution through more than 30 refugee resettlement organizations nationwide.

Core Values thrift store in Stamford is donating materials to be repurposed for the quilts.

Avery, a sewing educator and owner of Hipstitch Academy in Harpersfield, has more than 20 years of experience teaching sewing and building sewing communities. She teaches classes at her studio and other locations throughout the Catskills.

The workshop is free and will be held at Headwaters Arts Center, 66 Main St., Stamford. Registration and additional information at roxburyartsgroup.org
