WEST KORTRIGHT — The Saami Brothers of Pakistan will bring their family’s centuries-old musical tradition to the West Kortright Center Saturday, Sept. 26, with an afternoon vocal workshop followed by an evening performance of Qawwali and Khayal music.

The brothers are members of the Qawwal Bachon Ka Gharana of Delhi, a prominent lineage of Qawwali musicians whose traditions trace back to the 13th-century poet and musician Amir Khusrau. The Saami family has passed its musical traditions from generation to generation through oral instruction.

The afternoon workshop, “Ear, Voice, Heart: Learning Khayal with the Saami Brothers,” begins at 4 p.m. The 90-minute session will introduce participants to the fundamentals of Khayal and the family’s approach to teaching music through listening, repetition, breath, rhythm and melody. Participants will work with Raag Aiman and are encouraged to sing. No musical experience is required.

The grounds open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner available and drinks for sale at the concession stand. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be held indoors with general admission seating.

Concert tickets are $45. Members receive a 10% discount, and children 12 and younger receive half-price admission. The workshop costs $10 and has limited availability.

The West Kortright Center is located in West Kortright. Tickets and additional information are available at westkc.org. For questions, call 607-278-5454 or email info@westkc.org
