Catholic Charities of Sidney is providing a free backpack filled with essential school supplies for children enrolled in the Sidney Central School District and your household meets income requirements. Pre-registration is now through August 11. Stop at the Catholic Charities office in the Civic Center or call 607-604-4071 for more information.

Sidney Memorial Public Library will have a summer reading and the youth summer reading will be through August 18. Wednesday at 11 a.m. is Pre-K tablet time and from 3 to 5 p.m., Teen Club. Thursdays Pre-K read together at 1:30 p.m. and K to 2nd grade Thursdays at 3 p.m. crafts and creations with Miss C will be from 3-4:30 p.m. The Tween Club meets on Fridays from 3 to 4:30 p.m, Mondays is Minecraft Club for ages 8 and up from 3 to 4:30 p.m, Tuesdays at 10 a.m. is Story Time followed by Music for Munchkins at 10:45 a.m. The writing group meets once a month in the Smart Community Room. Join in for a chance to share writing and learning new things. Summer family event will be Thursday, July 27 at 6 p.m. with Trish and Dannielle with songs, tunes and stories, then on Wednesday, August 2 will be Night Dinosaur Expedition Adventure with Mike and Roberts Straka at 2 p.m.

Music at the Sidney Center Maywood Depot will be Sunday, July 30 with Ellen Harrington from 6 to 8 p.m. Enjoy the music while eating your pie and ice cream. Donations accepted for musicians.

The free Share the Bounty Meal will be on Thursday, July 27 serving from  4:30 to 6:30 p.m.at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall, Liberty Street. Menu will be oven baked chicken, pasta salad with vegetables, baked beans and dessert prepared by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Sidney.

Free Concert at the pavilion in Keith Clark Park, River Street on Wednesday, August 2 will be the Bainbridge Old Time Band from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The free Summer Series for families to enjoy this past Sunday was Dairy Day held at Keith Clark Park.  Kids as well as adults enjoyed the fun activities sponsored by the Cullman Child Development Center.  The activity tent had some 14 plus tables for kids and adults to interact with tic tac cow, learn cow breeds, churn butter, make your own ice cream, try to milk a cow, variety of crafts and much more. The children even made Thank you notes using various art supplies to design cards distributed to the many volunteers. Free dairy product samples of milk, ice cream, Cabot cheddar cheese were given out. The Salvation Army was giving away water. A dairy fact was presented: A dairy cow eats 140 pounds of food everyday and after eating and drinking water a cow makes 12-13 gallons of milk. 

Sample Recipe for making ice cream. In a small zip lock bag place ½ cup half and half, 1 tablespoon sugar and ¼ teaspoon vanilla and seal.  In a larger gallon bag place 3 cups ice and 1/3 cup rock salt. Place small bag in gallon bag, seal and shake until cream mixture hardens. Enjoy?  Sample Recipe for making  whipped butter, place 2 oz heavy cream  in snack cup with lid and shake for 5 to 10 minutes till butter forms in ball.  Pour off milky water and add some cold water to make the butter firmer, pour off water. Enjoy on a cracker. Both of these recipes were used at Dairy Day.

The last Summer Series for 2023 sponsored by Cullman Child Center will be Big Rigs Day on  Saturday, August  5 at Cullman located at West Road.

Unadilla

Free Breakfast in the Basement at the First United Methodist Church, 156 Main St will be Saturday, August 5. Take Out only from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Call 607-369-2052 for reservations. Breakfast held monthly on first and third Saturdays.

Every Thursday Farmers Market and vendors 6 to 8 p.m. through August 31. 187 Main Street, lot next to the Unadilla Diner/It’s My Deli.

Free Summer Concert Series Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. Main Street Community House Lawn. July 27 Dirt Road Express. August 3 is Midland Park. Ice Cream Sundaes and 50/50 to benefit Unadilla Historical Association sponsoring concerts available.

The Unadilla Public Library will have a Summer event for family presenting The Spoon Man on Tuesday, August 1 at 1 p.m. The Spoon Man has been playing the spoons for nearly 35 years. His program contains several outrageous impressions such as Glen Miller and Elvis combing together. He has an audience sing-a-long competition. He creates a mountain band out of members of the audience. You may also see him play forks and knives. In the event of rain, it will be held at the Unatego Elementary School.

A creative writing workshop will be at the Unadilla Public Library. Everyone has a story to tell. You can practice putting your stories down on paper in a relaxed supportive environment. Workshop for adults ages 18 and up will be on August 2 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Author Clara Mae Barnhart will lead the workshop. If you have questions contact clara.barnhart@gmail.com
