SIDNEY - The Sidney Memorial Library has a new director, Patrick McGowan, hailing from Ware, Mass. McGowan takes over for the previous director, Beth Paine, who has left the position.
McGowan previously worked in an insurance company covering claims such as group life, accidental death, dismemberment, and loss of sight claims, and decided that a change was in order.
“I wanted to choose a career that’s more uplifting than doing death claims,” McGowan explained. “People have home and people have work - or home and school - and the library is a third place where people can get together and exchange ideas and information and interact with each other in a real, physical presence, as opposed to a meta or social media.”
The library is preparing a variety of programs including a music program with classical guitarist Peter Fletcher scheduled for Aug. 5 at 1 p.m. If classical music isn’t your style, there will also be a dinosaur exhibition adventure on Wednesday, Aug. 2 at 2 p.m. “We’re doing innovative programming that enables people to get together, use the resources the library offers, and to have a good time.”
The Sidney Memorial Public Library located at 8 River Street, is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. The library will be closed on Sundays until after Labor Day.
