On Friday, June 19 at 3 p.m. on Dewey Field at the Cooperstown Beaver Valley Camp in Milford, 79 year-old Bill “Spaceman” Lee will take the mound for an 1886/1895 Vintage Base Ball Showcase between the Mountain Athletic Club of Fleischmann and the San Francisco Pelicans of the Bay Area Vintage Base Ball League.
Lee, now 79 is the oldest player to have pitched in a professional game and is still going strong. Last October, he threw 4 innings with 2 earned runs in an 1886 game for his family’s team the Strong Annabelles versus the Dublin Aces under the lights in the Northern Coast Classic in Berkley, CA. Famous for his “leephus” pitch and career with the Boston Red Sox (HOF), Montreal Expos and more recently the Savannah Bananas, Lee is a living legend who continues to draw inspiration from his Aunt Annabelle Lee - a star pitcher in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League during WWII - who he credits with teaching him how to throw a curveball as a child growing up in California.
Dewey Field is located a 10 minute drive from Cooperstown at 138 Towers Rd Milford, NY. Admission is free and donations appreciated. For more information, contact Collin Miller at macvb1895@gmail.com
