STAMFORD - Headwaters Arts Center will begin offering Art Lab, a free afterschool art program for students 12 and older, on Oct. 1.
The program will meet from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month at Headwaters Arts Center, 66 Main Street, according to Roxbury Arts Group.
Art Lab is designed to emphasize creative exploration rather than finished products. Each session will introduce activities that allow students to work independently or with guidance while experimenting with different materials and techniques.
The program is intended to supplement school-based art instruction and encourage students to develop their own creative interests. Activities will be shaped in part by participants, and guest artists will periodically lead sessions focused on specialized skills and techniques.
The National Endowment for the Arts has reported that arts education is associated with academic outcomes as well as social and emotional development.
Art Lab is free and operates as a drop-in program, but a parent or guardian must complete a consent form before a student participates.
