As we look forward to the warming temperatures and springtime activities, let’s also think about how we can keep our air clean so we can all enjoy it. One way to do this is to abide by the annual burn ban.
The annual burn ban prohibits residents from burning vegetation and brush from March 16 through May 14. Due to early-spring warming temperatures, lower humidity, and dead vegetation revealed by melted snow, NYS is at increased risk of wildfires. Wildfires can damage our lands, homes, and personal property, and the smoke contains pollutants, such as particulate matter, which can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation, wheezing, coughing, and trouble breathing.
Not all burning is banned. Some exceptions, such as small cooking fires using charcoal or untreated wood, are allowed. However, be sure to check your local regulations, as they may have additional prohibitions on open burning.
In 2024, DEC Forest Rangers extinguished 122 wildfires that spanned nearly 6,500 acres. Fire safety measures can help prevent wildfires year-round. Before starting any fire, check the fire danger map to ensure conditions are safe. Never leave a fire unattended and fully extinguish it once you are finished. Be sure to have an extinguisher or water nearby in case of an emergency. Following fire safety rules, such as not burning during the annual burn ban, can help keep everybody safe and help keep our air clean.
