SUNY Delhi and local families unite for ‘Dinner’s Ready’ pilot program to foster community connections

DELHI - In a pioneering effort to bridge the gap between the academic realm and the local community, SUNY Delhi’s O’Connor Center for Community Engagement launched “Dinner’s Ready,” a pilot program aimed at forging meaningful connections between college students and local families Aug. 27.

Spearheaded by Amy Randall, the initiative seeks to facilitate collaborative learning, civic engagement, and genuine friendships in an increasingly diverse world.

SUNY Delhi has long been dedicated to nurturing an environment where students, faculty, staff, and community members unite to explore synergies and develop collaborative initiatives. The O’Connor Center for Community Engagement is at the forefront of this commitment, actively promoting partnerships that enrich both the academic experience and the local community.

“Dinner’s Ready” was conceived in response to an Earth Day project where SUNY Delhi students engaged with the community. Randall recognized that while there was immense potential for interaction, genuine connections were lacking between the students and local families. This revelation sparked the creation of “Dinner’s Ready,” an avenue for students and families to break bread, share stories, and forge lasting bonds.

The pilot program invites local families who are eager to host college students for regular dinners, providing an informal and enriching space for cross-generational and cross-cultural interactions. These gatherings are designed to transcend mere socialization, offering opportunities for mentorship, networking, and relationship-building that extend beyond the academic sphere.

“By bringing students and families together through ‘Dinner’s Ready,’ we are fostering a unique environment of mutual learning and growth,” said Ann-Lis Glenn, coordinator of the O’Connor Center for Community Engagement. “This program encapsulates the true spirit of collaboration and civic engagement that SUNY Delhi holds dear.”

Randall said she envisions a future where the program becomes a cornerstone of community unity.

“We have a chance to bridge divides and enrich lives through these shared meals,” she stated. “The connections forged at the dinner table have the power to resonate through generations, promoting empathy, understanding, and a sense of belonging.”

“Dinner’s Ready” had its beta test at the home of Maya Boukai and Jon Crider. Attendees were enthusiastic about kicking off the full program this fall with a series of gatherings that promise to be the catalyst for meaningful relationships between SUNY Delhi students and local families. The program is not merely a meal-sharing initiative; it’s a statement of commitment to fostering genuine connections and enriching the fabric of the community.
