TREADWELL - For a century, a small group of women in this Delaware County hamlet has quietly shaped community life—organizing events, preserving local traditions and sustaining a sense of civic pride that has endured across generations.
In 2026, the GFWC Treadwell Community Improvement Club will mark its 100th anniversary with a full calendar of public events, inviting residents and visitors alike to celebrate a legacy of volunteer service.
Founded to promote “civic improvement and public spirit,” the club has spent decades at the center of community life in Treadwell and its surrounding area. In preparation for the milestone year, members have been compiling the organization’s history while planning a series of programs that reflect both tradition and continuity.
The celebration will begin with the community’s Memorial Day observance on Monday, May 25, at 9 a.m., followed by a combined Lawn Sale Day and Heritage Day on Saturday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day will feature vendors and activities, culminating in an evening banquet at 6 p.m.
Summer events will continue with a community picnic on July 12 at 4 p.m. and a Flower Show and Ice Cream Social on August 30 at 2 p.m., longstanding gatherings that highlight the club’s role in fostering neighborhood connection.
In September, the club will host a 25th anniversary observance of the Sept. 11 memorial on Friday, Sept. 11, at 6:30 p.m., followed later in the year by “Taste of Treadwell” on Nov. 15 and a holiday season lineup that includes a cookie exchange, holiday party and community caroling in December.
Organizers say the events are designed not only to commemorate the past, but to encourage participation in the present. Community members, organizations and businesses are invited to take part, particularly in the Memorial Day parade and Heritage Day, where vendor space remains available.
