I was very disappointed that Delaware County Sheriff DuMond reversed his position on cooperating with ICE and joined the lawsuit challenging the NY State law prohibiting a formal partnership between law enforcement and ICE. Even sadder is a statement by the Director of Federation for American Immigration Reform stating “Independently elected sheriffs should not be forced by Albany to abandon tools that keep dangerous criminal aliens from walking back onto their streets.” This statement is completely false. According to the NY Times analysis of federal data, more than half the people arrested by ICE in July had no criminal record. Less than 4% of those arrested had violent criminal records. We are a nation built by immigrants. It should not be a crime to seek safety or a better life for one’s family.
