It’s already getting so dark early, and we are two weeks away from changing the clocks. The colors are still beautiful and it’s supposed to be sunny all week, so hopefully we keep the leaves longer. But set your reminders to turn the clocks back Nov. 3. Also, this is a great time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

The Walton Central School District music department will host the high school fall concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24. This free concert will be held in the high school auditorium and the public is invited to attend. Featured ensembles include the symphonic orchestra and the high school chorus under the direction of Rebekah Doig, and the high school band, directed by Raymond Bartlett. Also performing will be the saxophone ensemble.

In keeping with tradition, the Mustard Seed Thrift Shop at the United Presbyterian Church will host its Christmas sale Saturday, Nov. 2 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Come welcome the Christmas season with their biggest sale ever.

The Gathering Table will serve shepherd’s pie (with ground beef) and dessert Saturday, Oct. 26 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the First Congregational Church. While you’re there, shop at Elijah’s Closet for bargains on gently used items and clothes.

The Trout Creek Community group will be having their annual trunk or treat Saturday, Oct. 26 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the Trout Creek Town Hall. There will also be a kid friendly haunted house at the schoolhouse during that time, as well as a hay ride. All are welcome, but if you’re decorating a trunk be there by 3 p.m.

There will be a Gingerbread Haunted House-making event at the Ogden Library Saturday, Oct. 26, from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. - a spook-tacular Halloween craft event for kids. They can let their creativity run wild building their own haunted house out of sweets. Once the haunted house is ready, you get to share the spine-chilling tale of the ghostly inhabitants who live there. You can make it scary, silly, or somewhere in between - the story is up to you. They’ll have cozy hot drinks to keep you toasty while you create and tell your spooky tales. Sign up required - call 607.865.5929, limit of 12 participants.

Walton EMS will host a chili/baked potato bar event with a costume contest Saturday, Oct. 26 starting at 5 p.m. at the Walton Fire Department. Join them for a warm dinner on a brisk Fall evening, dress your kiddos up for the costume contest and then enjoy the Walton Explorer Post Haunted/Scary House. The chili/potato bar is a free will offering.

Halloween night, Oct 31, the WCS student council will host a trunk or treat at the Townsend School parking lot from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Early voting in New York October 26 through Nov. 3 at the Board of Elections in Delhi. The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 5 at the regular polling place - the bus garage in Walton. It’s important to exercise your right to vote, so go early if you think that you might not get there on the day.

It’s time again for the Wellness Program brought to you by the Walton chapter of NYS Woman, Inc. AMBA panel will screen for many levels to check on coronary disease, kidney disease, anemia, liver disease, diabetes, and other tests. The AMBA panel costs under $100, but is not covered by insurance or Medicaid. Your doctor will have to authorize the tests. Price will include the collection fee and a small handling fee for the NYS Woman. There are also optional tests available for an additional fee. The tests will be performed at the United Presbyterian Church on East Street, (red brick), Saturday, Nov 2, by appointment only, between 6:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Call 1-800-234-8888 to make an appointment today. Have your doctor’s name and address available when you call. Be sure to ask the operator about all the options available to you. Photo ID is required on the day of the event.

Walton is celebrating one of their own Saturday, Nov. 30 as the Walton Theatre welcomes author Maureen Spataro and Walton’s own Mary Greene for an exclusive book signing of their best selling book, “Take Me With You” from 1-2 p.m. at the theatre. A collection of stories from 20 contributors, the book celebrates the lessons, wisdom, and traditions handed down to us by the women who raised us. Mary’s chapter celebrates her own mother, Nancy Greene. The perfect holiday gift for the women in your life.

Trout Creek annual craft fair Saturday, Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Trout Creek Firehall and Schoolhouse. Both venues are full. Come get started on your Christmas shopping - or spoil yourself.

New Hope Community Church will be hosting a prayer workshop Friday, Oct. 25, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 26, 8:30 – 1 p.m. Friday night and Saturday will cover different content. Jon Mitchell from Atlanta, Georgia, will be the teacher, teaching on the basics of how to have a good prayer life. Everyone is welcome. There is no cost to attend. Every participant will receive a booklet. If you would like to attend, call 607-865-5436 and leave a message. The appropriate number of booklets will be prepared. Invest a few hours learning to pray.

Rainbow Lodge will host its annual hunter’s dinner and auction to benefit Kalurah Shriners activities. Auctioned will be sealed gift bags valued at $15 or more with crafts, hinting related items or other unique items. Auction starts at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16 at the restaurant. Make a reservation for the dinner at 607-865-7534.

Save Saturday, Nov. 9 for the annual Walton Fire Department turkey raffle. Admission is $2 per person; doors open at 5 p.m. Turkey, pepperoni sticks, pork, spiral hams and baskets - it’s always a popular event. Get there early to get a seat. 

The Walton Chamber is still looking for people who want to paint Christmas windows prior to the Thanksgiving weekend parade Nov. 29. Give me a call if you have a group to paint a window or if you have a business with a window to paint. We have about a dozen signed up, and still need a few windows. Businesses who are interested, contact me on Facebook messenger.

Proof of eligibility may be required. One turkey per person. Pickup will be Nov. 22 from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at the Walton Vets Club, 10 Park Street.
