The Walton American Legion Post #32 Ladies Auxiliary in partnership with Walton Cemetery, will participate in the national Wreaths Across America program this winter, inviting residents to sponsor wreaths for veterans’ graves and to join a community ceremony at noon Saturday, Dec. 13 at Walton Cemetery.
Sponsorships are $17 per wreath, with sales running through Dec. 1. Organizers will sell wreaths around town and at the auxiliary’s monthly dinners; checks may be mailed to Walton ALA, 10 Park Street, Walton, NY 13856.
Those purchasing for a specific grave are asked to note the name and whether they plan to place the wreath themselves. Volunteers from local Boy and Girl Scout troops, school and veterans’ groups—and anyone else who wishes to help—will assist with placement in December and removal in April. For information, contact Linda Belmont at 607-865-5179 or the Vet’s Club at 607-865-8094.
Founded as a national nonprofit in 2007, Wreaths Across America traces its origins to a 1992 wreath donation at Arlington National Cemetery and now coordinates ceremonies at thousands of sites each December under the banner “Remember, Honor, Teach.” This year’s National Wreaths Across America Day is Saturday, Dec. 13, when millions of volunteers are expected to lay balsam wreaths across the country.
Wreath sponsorships are set nationally at $17 and are administered through registered local groups such as the Walton Auxiliary.
