The public is invited to Sidney’s annual Arbor Day celebration Friday, April 26 at the pavilion in Keith Clark Park beginning at 10 a.m.

A musical performance by the Sidney Central Elementary School band will start the event. A welcome by Shade Tree Commission chairperson Lorrie Roach will follow with an introduction of Sidney’s commission members and the scope of their mission to work toward the requirements designating Sidney as a tree city for the 28th year. In addition to sponsoring the annual Arbor Day celebration, the commission provides guidance for the Sidney Department of Public Works to plant, maintain and remove trees from streets, parks, and other public spaces in the community.

Since 1994, Arbor trees have been planted in dedication to individuals and groups throughout Keith Clark Park and other areas of the village. Each Arbor Day tree is indicated by a plaque with dedication information.

A highlight of the event will be the dedication of the Arbor Day tree to Dennis Porter for his contributions to the Sidney community which include serving as a director and former executive director for Sidney United Way. A longtime Rotarian, Porter remains active in the organization and is currently the president of Sidney’s Rotary Community Foundation. Born and raised in Sidney, he is vice-president of strategic planning for the Sidney Alumni Association and a member of the Knights of Columbus at Sacred Heart Parish. Scouting is another important role throughout Porter’s life and he is a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award for longtime distinguished service to young people within a Boy Scouts of America local council.

Sidney Central School fifth grade students will display their artwork depicting the Arbor Day theme “Trees Are Terrific.”

To close the 2024 Arbor Day celebration, Delaware County Soil and Water Conservation District will provide saplings to be distributed while the supply lasts.
