It’s August and summer is going by fast. This is Walton Fair week, the usual week of fun for the adults and kids. Senior Citizen’s Day is Thursday and senior admission is only $5 for seniors.
July’s Senior Citizens meeting guest speaker was Ray LaFever of Bovina. He shared his stories of a recent trip to England. He was there during the coronation of the new king. He shared his many pictures he took of England and the seniors hope he will come back again with more stories of his next trip to Korea and Japan. The seniors are reminded of Senior Fun Day Aug. 24 and the Sunflower Harvest Ball Sept. 10. The Aug. 30 guest speaker will be from the Delaware Co. Sheriff Dept. Plan to ask questions on safety operations for older adults both around your home and with your financial accounts, phone scams targeting seniors or medicare cards. The Seniors’ next meeting is Wednesday, Aug. 30 at noon at the Town Hall for the dish to pass dinner and meeting to follow the lunch.
An ice cream social was held Aug. 5 at the Basin and Terry Clove Community Hall. Friends and neighbors gathered at the Hall to enjoy ice cream sundaes with various topongs. Many new acquaintances were made and a great time was had by all. Many in attendance expressed that the social was a great idea to bring the neighbors together and enjoy each other’s company.
Hamden Schoolhouse Museum, East River Road is open for visitors to come see the many interesting items on display. Historians Caroline and William Wright will be available on these dates to show you around: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, and Saturday, Aug.26; Saturday, Sept. 9, and Sunday, Sept. 24; Sunday, Oct. 8, Saturday, Oct. 21 - or by appointment. Grandma’s recipe for Bread and Butter Pickles (Rich Liddle’s request) slice thin 1 gallon cucumbers, 8 small onions, 2 green peppers, 1 red pepper, put in large bowl add 1/2 cup salt and 1 quart ice cubes. Cover with lid and let stand 3 hours. Drain, rinse and drain again. Add 5 cups sugar, 1 1/2 tsp tumeric, 1/2 tsp cloves, 1 tsp celery seed, 2 tsp mustard seed, 5 cups vinegar. Pour over cucumbers. Bring to boiling point. Ladle hot mixture into hot jars and put caps on. Process for 10 minutes in boiling water bath.
My Thoughts of the week: The only thing I have to talk about this week is the wonderful birthday I had. It started out with my friends coming to MacDonald’s first thing in the morning to wish me a happy birthday. In the evening my family and friends came to my son’s home for a barbecue dinner and that was a great time for me. I also had visitors, many phone calls and cards. So even though it was a very great day I still don’t like the age it brings with it. Thank you all for making it a great day for me.
Lynn Kinch’s joke of the week: A Golfer asked the pastor with him, “How do you let off steam? Say if you miss a shot and your ball goes into a sand trap?” The pastor replied, “I just repeat the names of some of my congregation members with feeling.”
Senior Moments: My friend and I got stuck in the middle of the lake today, dear God. Thank you for sending the Coast Guard to rescue us. Next time no sailing without enough fuel for the motor in case the wind dies down which is what happened this time. We were about to ask you to help us walk on water so we could reach shore when you sent help.
A cute saying: The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.
Helpful Hints: On hot summer days like we have been having, take cool showers and baths to feel cooler quickly. Consider installing an air conditioner. If that’s not possible at the very least use a fan to circulate the air.
