Feeding the hungry

DELHI - The United Ministry Food Pantry celebrated more than 40 volunteers who make it possible to support the many food missions that help those in the community of Delhi with food insecurities Sunday, June 23. Food missions include the Delhi Food Pantry, which is open twice weekly, food giveaways - which include the packing and delivery of 75 boxes of food every other month to area seniors, and the  monthly distribution of 16 boxes of food to the homeless housed in the community.

While Delaware Opportunities provides most of the food that is distributed at the food pantry, it takes many volunteers to handle deliveries and shelf food items. In addition, volunteers shop for other perishables that supplement the food received.

Due to the generosity of our many community organizations, churches and individuals, the food pantry is also able to offer food giveaways for seniors and homeless. The boxes include needed staples and fresh food. Endless shopping for quality food at good prices and gathering it into one place, packing and distributing the boxes, takes many hands. Volunteers are devoted, returning month after month to make sure these missions happen.

Each volunteer received a certificate of appreciation and a reusable canvas bag saying “United Ministry Food Pantry Loves Its Volunteers.”

A coffee hour in honor of the volunteers was held immediately following the service.
