‘My Own Side of the Mountain,’ Oct. 12

Meredith Historical Society will sponsor a program titled, “My Own Side of the Mountain,” presented by Benjamin Shaw Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. at the former Charlotte Valley Church, 10044 Elk Creek Road, East Meredith, now the home of the historical society.

In this program, Shaw will share his memories of growing up on the family farm on Honest Brook Road during the 1940s and 1950s, memories he’s chronicled in a book titled, “My Own Side of the Mountain.”

Shaw’s book was inspired by the fictional novel, “My Side of the Mountain,” written and illustrated by Jean Craighead George, in which Sam Gribley ran away from home to live on his great-grandfather’s abandoned farm near Delhi. Shaw’s parallel to Gribley is that he was reared on the farm owned by his great-grandfather, Watson Taylor Shaw, which was within a few miles of the setting of Sam Gribley’s story.

Admission is free and refreshments will be served.
