Sophia “Sophie” Eppich, 83, passed peacefully on June 8, 2024, at her home in Hamden, while surrounded by her loving family, following a very brief battle with cancer.

Sophia was born on July 19, 1940, in Stockendorf, Gottschee, Yugoslavia, the twin daughter of the late Franz and Johanna Meditz. After World War II, Sophia and her family became displaced persons after the Communist government in Yugoslavia forced them to leave their homeland because they were ethnic Austrian. In 1951 they emigrated to the United States with the help of family already here and initially settled in Brooklyn. Sophia found employment as a clerical worker until she left the workforce to raise her family. On May 28, 1960, Sophia married Frank Eppich in Queens, and together they raised their five children in Ridgewood and Middle Village, Queens, until June 1993, when they moved to their retirement home in Hamden. Along with raising and caring for her family, Sophia enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and bowling.

Sophia is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Frank; her children Frank John (Anita) Eppich, of Hamden, Anna Eppich of Woodside, and Elizabeth Krische of Hamden; grandchildren Michael and Christopher Maasbach, Katherine Mecca, Frank and Joseph Eppich, Steven Kordisch, and Amanda and Paul Krische as well as great-grandchildren Daniel, Liesel, Nathaniel and Everly Maasbach, and Jack Mecca; and one brother: Henry Meditz.

Sophia was predeceased by daughters: Theresa Maasbach and Margaret Trasolini; brothers: Karl, Frank, Josef and Fred Meditz; and a sister Marie Gregoretti.
