Albert R. Barber, 91, of Walton, passed away Feb. 9, 2024, at O’Connor Hospital in Delhi surrounded by family.

Albert, known to most as “Al,” was born in Town of Butternuts to the late William and Alice (Daniels) Barber on July 8, 1932. He was a graduate of Laurens Central High School. He married Marian Grotevant on Aug. 30, 1956.

Al served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1952-1959. He retired as a truck driver in 1992 after 38 years at Agway Feed Store. Al was a member of Walton Mountain Sportsmen Club and Walton Fire Department. He had 50 years of volunteer service with the Walton Fire Department, serving as fire chief and later fire commissioner. He was an avid bowler in the Farmer’s League at Walton Lanes. He enjoyed rooting for the New York Giants, New York Yankees, and his grandchildren’s sports teams.

Al is survived by his wife of 67 years Marian, four daughters, Rose (Gerald) Tennant of Treadwell, Diane Barber of Springfield Center, Jane (Bruce) Sulger of Walton, and Virginia (Michael) Velardi of Walton; grandchildren Gregory (Cameron) Tennant and Jeffrey Tennant, both of North Carolina; Rebecca (Jason) Scofield of Walton, Sara (Jeremiah) Anderson of Delhi, Janine and Hannah Velardi both of Walton; great-grandchildren Alexa, Madison, and Logan Scofield, and Chloe Anderson; his sister Florence (Wayne) Aldrich of San Antonio, Texas, his sister-in-law Beatrice Bennett of Walton, as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Al was predeceased by his brother Howard Barber and his sister Dora Carr.

A Graveside service will take place in the spring at the Walton Cemetery.
